Ornament Storage Boxes And How They Came To Be

Posted by kathy stanton on

My husband and I started collecting ornaments when we inherited many from our parents and grandparents shortly after we got married.  We felt a responsibility to protect those heirlooms for our family to be.  That was in the late 80’s when there were no such things as ornament storage boxes; they simply didn’t exist.  So my hubby Steve, a life-long tinker-er had to solve that problem.  He’d always enjoyed arts and crafts - another inheritance from my beautiful Mother-in-Law Henri - so creating a functional ornament storage box wasn’t his only objective, it also had to be visually appealing.  Oh, and I forgot to mention that he was already a manufacturer of specialty packaging and high-end items like steamer trunks, hat and jewelry boxes, so this was an exciting new area to explore!

First we did some research to find out why there were some brown spots on a few of our antique ornaments. It turns out that humidity is not good for the silvered paint on the inside of many ornaments.  More investigating revealed that over time, an acidic environment can also be harmful to hand-blown glass ornaments.

So Steve looked for a chipboard material that would be rigid but lightweight, he also needed it to be completely acid-free and have a tarnish inhibitor. He used metal stays in the corners to make the box very sturdy and he made dividers to create individual cubbies for each ornament, but he made them adjustable to accommodate longer ornaments and unusual shapes and sizes.  He added removable trays so that one ornament storage box could hold many ornaments.  Finally, he laminated it with a beautiful Christmas themed fabric which looked gorgeous but also added to the strength and sturdiness of the box.

Since Ultimate Christmas Storage was born we’ve probably had 30 different prints, all of them a beautiful addition to a home’s holiday decor.  Our ornament storage boxes were the first and are still the only acid-free, archival quality boxes on the market.  We feel very fortunate to have loyal customers all over the country that continue to buy our fabric covered ornament storage boxes for their own collections and gift them to kids and grandkids, creating a new generation of collectors.  In the last 10 years we’ve also had a  welcome success with our Archival Kraft Storage boxes that have all of the same great qualities.

My Christmas ornament collection may be the most organized part of my home and my life! Let Ultimate Christmas Storage help you get organized while protecting your treasured collections.  Feel free to contact me directly if you have questions at 310-625-6025 or customerservice@ultimatechristmas.com, attention Kathy.  Thank you!
